In 2010, around 75% of white people were in long-term relationships with white people. There are 26.4% of black men who are married to white women, 39.9% who are married to black women, and 32.1% who are married to brown women. A little more than 50% of black women married white men (brancos), 22.9% married brown men, and 25.5% married black men. Nearly 69% of those who identify as pardos (brown men and women) are married to another pardo. Several ways can be taken into account when analyzing these numbers. About 31% of all marriages in the country are interracial, a continuing rise in the percentage of interracial marriages. The marriage rate of black men with whites is 10% higher than the marriage rate of black women with whites (brancos).
Brazilians have indicated a racial hierarchy in terms of interracial relationships, marriages, and social status for the past 50 years within the larger study of race/racism. Because black women spend more of their lives single and are generally older at the time of marriage than those in other demographic groups, they often occupy the bottom of the marriage ladder. Over the past century, many black families have also encouraged their children to marry lighter/whiter people in order to “whiten” or “improve” their families. In the late 19th century, white elites adopted the idea of embranquecimento (whitening) in order to rid the nation of Afro-Brazilians and make the nation white. As a result, it’s possible to argue that there is more to interracial marriage and relationships than just love.
